The Explore2 Project: Hydrological Projections to Support Water Resource Management

Funded by the French Biodiversity Office and the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the Explore2 project set out to describe climate and water resource trends across mainland France throughout the 21st century, while promoting their sustainable use.

It has produced a unique set of projections, unmatched in Europe, in terms of the range of models applied and the spatial and temporal resolution achieved. This was made possible thanks to a community of around forty scientists from various research institutions, brought together around the challenges of climate change. In addition, about a hundred representatives of potential end-users of the Explore2 results also took part in the project.

Under the coordination of INRAE and the International Office for Water (OiEau), they worked collectively to develop information that water managers can easily use in their respective regions.

To help better understand the uncertainties linked to climate projections, the scientists proposed four climate narratives that illustrate the diversity of possible futures. Following the example of the IPCC, they also produced a summary of the main conclusions for mainland France across a range of key hydrological variables, specifying the level of confidence in these results and the current limits of knowledge.
